Abstract: | In the design domain, it has become increasingly important to take human values into consideration. Human values are what a person or group of people consider important in life. However, many designers and their stakeholders struggle with this abstract concept. This project aims at finding a way to best visualize human values such that they can help both designers and their stakeholders understand human values better. Through three studies, several core aspects to these visualizations have been defined. The results show that visualizations of human values should include four elements: value name, value description, value visualization (imagery), and other written context. The imagery must be a digital illustration that is neither too simple nor too overwhelming. All elements must be combined in a clear and easily discernable manner to form the value visualization. Several created visualizations were tested among various state-of-the-art products. The test indicates that the created visualizations, along with one of the state-of-the-art products, are preferred over the other products. However, the visualizations could not be analyzed in a designer-stakeholder interaction. Therefore, it was concluded that it can be assumed that the approach taken in this thesis works satisfactory to visualize human values. |
