Abstract: | There are several methods by which 3D models of objects can be generated using close range photogrammetric software. Open source and free to use software are a low-cost alternative to the professional software available for cultural heritage documentation. These open source software are gaining popularity as their accuracy and efficiency is improving in close range photogrammetric applications. This project evaluates the accuracy of three point cloud based modeling software, two open source and free to use software (PMVS and Autodesk 123D) and one professional software (PhotoModeler). The project also aims to apply CAD-like modeling for the reconstruction of Tibetan monastery using Autodesk ImageModeler. In CAD-like image based modeling comparative analysis of model and survey measurements of the building structure are assessed. Results show that the open source and free to used software are more accurate than the professional software. The Empirical accuracy of the two open source and free to used software is more than that of the professional software that was used. The results for the CAD-like modeling revealed that the accuracy of the model created was very high which means that the difference between the 3D model and survey measurements was minimal. 3D primitives’ generalization, orientation accuracy and measurement uncertainties influence the deviation between wireframe model and textured model of structure.
