Abstract: | The Dutch Climate Ambition is to become natural gas-free by 2050. This means that around 8 million houses must be uncoupled from natural gas and provide renewable energy infrastructure. This study investigates what are the main challenges encountered by communication professionals and researchers with respect to the energy transition. The second goal of this paper is to present what is the opinion of researchers about the challenges encountered by practitioners and how the barriers can be explained based on human behavior theories. The insights were collected using semi-structured interviews, with a sample of 17 (N=17) participants, specifically 11 (N=11) communication practitioners from energy supply, housing corporations, energy NGOs, governmental institutions, and 6 (N=6) researchers from an educational institute. The findings showed that the main challenges are awareness, intrinsic motivation, and legislation, called by researchers 'energy trilemma'. |
