Abstract:Colonic motility disorders affect many adults as well as children, but diagnostic procedures are often invasive, require complex skills and are not always conclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate whether surface electrography (sEEnG) could be used as a non-invasive diagnostic tool of colonic motility disorders. In pre- and postprandial states, sEEnG measurements were performed in healthy adults and children as well as in adults and children suffering from a colonic motility disorder. We found that in both healthy adults and children, colonic activity could be measured adequately using sEEnG. Furthermore, no interference from gastric activity was present at sigmoidal sEEnG measurements. Comparing healthy children with pediatric patients revealed that relative postprandial power increase in patients tended to be lower. However, movement artefacts may have affected these findings. Preliminary results from adults with Hirschsprung’s disease showed a clear attenuation of colonic activity in the affected region. On average, the sEEnG procedure was rated more positively than the diagnostic procedure the patients were initially diagnosed with. In conclusion, sEEnG shows potential as a diagnostic tool in colonic motility disorders and future research should focus on correctly interpreting sEEnG recordings in adults and children.
