Abstract:Ships sail all across the world to the most far-flung locations to transport people, cargo, and firepower across vast distances. In most of those cases, the information about the ship’s location, size, and destination are provided with an automatic system that sends such information all around, helping to avoid collisions or other such complications. In some cases, however, the information provided by the automatic system provided to it by humans can be influenced by accidental human error or malicious intent, and be incorrect. This paper looks at the building of a suitable dataset of images of ships from imagery available online, namely from the site Shipspotting.com and then using this data to create a classifier. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the use of a pre-trained 18 layer ResNet model and showcase the benefits of upgrading to a 34 layer ResNet model when trying to achieving good performance for ship image classification.
