Abstract:The present study focuses on the framing of the coronacrisis of 2020 by two different German news outlets; Die Welt and Süddeutsche Zeitung. The research concerned for one, how the framing developed from the first of January 2020, when the coronavirus was first reported on in the two newspapers, until the first of April 2020. Secondly, a point of interest were the differences between the framing by Die Welt and the framing by Süddeutsche Zeitung. The method consisted of a comparative content analysis of 180 articles in total, 90 by Die Welt and 90 by Süddeutsche Zeitung. Results showed that the generel framing by the two newspapers did not differ to a large extent and concerning the development, it can be said that in the beginning, the crisis was framed as something far away and harmless. This developed into framing it as an immediate threat. The main differences seemed to be that one, Süddeutsche Zeitung was generally more pessimistic, two, the focal points of the two outlets differed and three, that Die Welt used more dramatic language. Therefore, citizens should choose multiple news outlets in order to get the full picture of a situation and journalists should be responsible in their reporting about public health crises.
