Abstract:Increasingly, physicians are engaging in medical leadership roles and eager to learn about the opportunities it provides for them, patients and society at large. Yet, only in six of the 195 countries in the world explicitly delivered a set of skills that physicians must have to be effective medical leaders. Furthermore, little is known about effective strategies and tactics for developing medical leadership on a national level. Led by an international group of experts, this study identifies developmental approaches of six countries to the making of national medical leadership. Next to a systematic literature review, archival data and fifteen semi-structured interviews have been thematically analyzed. First, we provide insights in different definitions of medical leadership used in various countries. Second, we propose a developmental phasing model consisting of four distinct phases. We also show fourteen factors that facilitate and/or impede the making and implementation of national medical leadership, and we present nine ‘interventions’ that can stimulate medical leadership development. We do so in order for international healthcare networks to enable more opportunities for patients, through medical leaders who better learn how to optimize the quality of (inter)national healthcare provision.
