Abstract:Background: From positive psychology there has recently been a focus on strength-based approach in mental health. This approach is characterized by a focus on resilience within adversity and appreciation of opportunities. Recently future imagination has become more central as a promising way to give meaning to and anticipate future adversity such as chronic mental illness. Objective: This study therefore aims to understand how resilience occurs in future imagination of psychiatric patients with personality disorders participating in a recovery process as a vision of the future may increase recovery and future resilience imagination. A distinction is made between sources of resilience and pathways to resilience. Insight into this provides knowledge about how future imagination can be used for these patients to increase reslience pre-, during- and after a recovery process. Method: For operationalization of future imagination ‘Letters from the future’ of 41 psychiatric patients with personality disorders participating a recovery process are qualitatively analysed. Participants were asked to write a letter after which they were analyzed using ‘Atlast.ti’ The coding scheme used as a guiding framework is based on resources of resilience according to Ungar in the form of individual, caregiver and contextual resources. Pathways to resilience are also classified based on the existential theory of Schuhmann consisting of the pathways ‘sustainability’, ‘recovery’ and ‘growth’. The encoding process is both deductive and inductive since the framework is used flexible with space for changes. Results: Besides individual, caring and contextual resilience sources, participants describe positive psychological capacities and nature. All pathways describe individual sources often, psychological caring resources more often than physical and less contextual cultural resources There seem to exist predictive patterns with respect to pathway to resilience, resources, stability of both and time perception. All pathways, especially ‘growth’, describes positive psychology capacities often. ‘Sustainability’ is associated with long term, stability, individual, educational resources and nature. ‘Growth’, characterized by medium-term and instability, describes also life lessons and spiritual resources often. ‘Recovery’ matches with changing pathways, stable resources, short term and psychological care resources. Conclusion: Besides individual resources it seems that within future research focus on positive psychology is important and found patterns may serve as a basis for future research and can possibly be used in practice, for example, in screening. Contextual cultural sources has been reported limited while they seem imporant for social functioning and this may provide a focal point in treatment.
