Abstract:Background: To enlarge the chances of finding and retaining a job for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), an electronic support system was developed. This electronic support system, ‘the Bodyguard’, is an eHealth application developed for the monitoring and timely signaling of stress to avoid undesirable social behavior initiated by stress and efficiently and effectively and efficiently and effectively improve the support of job coaches for employed adults with ASD or even reduce the support. Bodyguard could contribute to controllability awareness and empowerment by monitoring and timely signaling of stress. So it can stimulate the self-management for employed adults with ASD, also by persuasive design and persuasive content. Objective: This study explored how Bodyguard supports self-management of stress of employed individuals with ASD. Method: A qualitative study design with semi-structured, audio taped interviews and an open-ended questionnaire was undertaken. Two individuals with ASD and their jobcoaches participated. Bodyguard has been tested by the individuals with ASD for two weeks. Results: Design principles rehearsal and selfmonitoring in the category primary task support of persuasive systems might influence controllability awareness and empowerment of individuals with ASD. However, only in ‘personal control’ situations. Bodyguard could support empowerment by making the individual with ASD more independently of their jobcoach. Modification of persuasive design principles like credibility or tailoring is needed. This could support the motivation to use Bodyguard, which now occurs by the design principle liking. Conclusion: Bodyguard, as a persuasive system, contribute to self-management of stress by people with ASD by increasing controllability awareness in situations where the client has personal control and if stress data is seen by a graphic it also contribute to greater empowerment so the client can act more independently.
