Abstract:To provide good and fast care with the available resources, it gets more important to optimize healthcare processes. The brachytherapy treatment process (internal radiotherapy) is a very complex healthcare process involving many departments (e.g., OR, recovery, MRI, nursing) and consecutive steps in order to irradiate a patient. This research is a case study on the brachytherapy treatment process of Amsterdam UMC. By moving the oncological care within their hospital, there is an opportunity to improve the treatment process. The goal is to realize timely treatment and an efficient and patient-friendly treatment process. With the use of discrete-event simulation, we defined bottlenecks and room for improvement. Different strategic, tactical, and operational strategies are evaluated using the simulation model, resulting in opportunities to decrease the treatment's access time and lead time, and assessing future possibilities used for decision making.
