Abstract:The recent outbreak of the coronavirus and the imposed corona-measures led to the rise of corona-protests. The police play an important role here, being responsible for public order keeping. This research investigates the policing of the corona-protest of January 17 2021. The following research question will be answered: ‘To what extent can the derailment of the corona-protest of January 17, 2021 be explained by the mode of policing?’. On the basis of theory on large-scale public order keeping by the Dutch police, it is expected that the police’s preparation for the protest, the police’s information about the protest, the strategy for the police action, the police action and the behaviour of the demonstrators and the confrontation with the police are factors that explain the outcome of the corona-protest. To gather data, two interviews were held with Amsterdam police officers. Differences as well as similarities were found between the policing of ordinary protests and the policing of the corona-protest of January 17. The study's findings revealed that the mode of policing as well as the presence of the corona-measures and the behaviour of the demonstrators played a role in explaining the derailment of the corona-protest on January 17, 2021.
