Abstract:Feelings of loneliness have been increasing in society nowadays. Self-compassion might be a relevant concept because cross-sectional studies have shown that it is negatively correlated with loneliness. However, these have focused on the trait levels of self-compassion and loneliness. There appears to be a need for insight into the relation on the state level and its daily, individual course. The experience sampling method was used to investigate the association of state self-compassion and state loneliness, also taking into account trait self-compassion as an interaction. It was shown that state self-compassion and loneliness are negatively associated. Trait self-compassion showed to have a significant interaction effect. Participants in the low trait self-compassion group had a moderate negative association, while those in the high trait group showed a weak negative association. Further research is needed on underlying mechanisms and causality as this was the first study on state self-compassion and loneliness. Practicing short self-compassion exercises to increase state self-compassion might help to experience lower levels of loneliness in daily life.
