Abstract:High obesity rates illustrate an issue of our time. Food labelling is an effective tool to promote healthier food choices. Previous quantitative nutrition research has shown that the Nutri-Score is favoured by European societies. However, insights into Nutri-Score perceptions remain scarce, limiting the food industry's ability to understand consumer attitudes and usage patterns. This study used a qualitative approach to examine label perception and its relationship to healthy lifestyles in German consumer society. 18 Nutri-Score users were interviewed. Positive label perception and attitude were noted. Perceived as a helpful tool for product decisions, the Nutri-Score contributes to maintaining health through a balanced diet and lifestyle. The comparability of foods within a category is particularly valued. It owes its attractiveness to the traffic light design, which is understood as breaking down barriers to use. However, the lack of communication about the correct application and ultimately the risk of users being misled by sometimes questionable product classifications are criticised. A countermeasure would be information campaigns. The results contribute theoretical data and provide practical approaches for Nutri-Score practitioners to further develop the label. Future research is proposed that specifically examines consumer perceptions of the Nutri-Score design.
