Abstract:Over the years the freight transportation industry has become more complex, with increasing delivery demands. To increase the efficiency in the logistics sector it is necessary to manage goods during transportation. This can be achieved by introducing the IoT into transportation making the logistics ‘smart’. IoT objects can give real-time information on transit times, alternative routes and make decisions, which increase the flexibility of the routing system. One challenge is securing the collected data stored on sensing devices from unauthorized access. There is need for efficient secure authentication in the resource constrained IoT objects. This work proposes randomized version of the sensed data from the IoT objects itself for use in a Sensor PUF for authentication. Three Random Number Generators are designed and tested on a dataset similar to transportation data. The tested randomization methods are based on bitwise XOR, multiplication with a natural constant or the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The RNGs are tested for their randomization abilities, as well as their time complexity and time consumption. The results show that the best randomization results are achieved by applying the FFT and a bitwise XOR. Further tests also indicate that this RNG works well on short term data gathering.
