Abstract:The main goal of this study is to ensure that the practice of the famous sport, ice skating, remains possible in the future, taking into account the effects of climate change. This study explored the effects of placing an insulating layer beneath the asphalt, by constructing a small scale setup of the ice rink floor and creating an ice growth model. Results of the setup and the model showed that placing an insulating layer beneath the asphalt significantly improves the chances of creating an ice layer. The ice skating rink in Winterswijk has adopted this new design. In addition, the ice skating rink in Winterswijk implemented the use of spray carts to apply layers of water on the track. This method of creating an ice floor is shown to be more efficient and allows for more precise control of the ice floor thickness. The ice growth model showed that the timing of adding a new layer of water is crucial. A new layer should be applied before the last layer is completely frozen to achieve the fastest rate of ice growth.
