| Abstract: | Humans use the sense of touch to interact with the world around them. The sense of touch is of high significance in interpersonal relationships as it is able to evoke positive emotional experiences as well as negative experiences such as a sudden touch by a stranger. Although current communication systems still primarily rely on vision and hearing, social mediated touch allows people to touch each other over distance by using haptic feedback. Recently, the interest in social mediated touch has increased, resulting in the development of numerous prototypes and studies. In particular, research has shown that haptic technology for the purpose of interpersonal touch over a distance is able to feel ”touch-like” even without another person being physically present. Especially in parallel sports like jogging, this type of interaction could be significant in terms of extending the level of physical capabilities and helping to save time in busy schedules. Yet some emerging systems have been proposed to support these social activity experiences by connecting geographically distant participants in order to help extend the availability of participants. However, research on applying mediated interactions in running activities, instead of face-to-face interactions, is still limited. As a result, the lack of understanding of this particular relationship restricts the development of social mediated touch in running activities, resulting in limiting users to employ its potential. Therefore, this bachelor project focuses on creating a haptic wearable that allows joggers to run together over a distance through implementing social mediated touch and GPS location-based haptic feedback. |
