Abstract:Using your voice effectively during a presentation is important. Most students do not get enough opportunities to attain an acceptable level of this public speaking skill, due to time and place restrictions and the limited capacity of the staff with traditional instruction methods. Online training may offer a solution, as it allows learners to practice repeatedly without time and place restrictions. This study investigates the effect of an online training on the development of students’ use of voice. In addition, this study investigates the influence of public speaking anxiety on students’ use of voice when presenting in front of an online audience, as this causes fear in students and, according to existing literature, negatively influences their performance. 25 students participated in an online training on how to use their voice effectively and completed a survey regarding their public speaking anxiety. Using a codebook, participants’ presentations were assessed for their use of voice to see if it improved or deteriorated. Results show that the online training has a significantly positive effect on participants’ use of voice, suggesting that the online training helps students to improve their use of voice. Although students’ use of voice deteriorated in front of an online audience, it is suggested that this was not attributable to public speaking anxiety, as results show a non-significant influence of public speaking anxiety. Future research can focus on renewing this study to more easily find significant results and create an online environment that even more resembles an authentic instruction method.
