Abstract:This thesis is performed at HAVI Logistics. The aim is to integrate the process of transport planning with the ordering process. There is a VMI partnership with the largest customer, which is in the food sector. Therefore, we have to deal with shelf life restrictions, which is one of the main obstacles in applying inventory routing problems in the food sector. These shelf lives differ for different temperature zones. The main research question is "How can HAVI save on operational costs by balancing the workload within a week, without violating customers’ restrictions including storage capacities at the customers’ locations?" We have built a model, in which the delivery patterns and delivery quantities are optimized in a single optimization step. We achieved this by not taking the delivery patterns and delivery quantities as variables. Instead, for each delivery unit we calculated delivery windows stating the possible delivery times regarding, storage capacities, shelf life, and customer specific time windows. We have built an algorithm, which we use to perform a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the performance of a routing schedule when volumes deviate from forecast. We have showed that operational costs are reduced while balancing the workload, by reducing the fleet size.
