| Abstract: | The Ukrainian Crisis in 2014 is broadly considered the prime example for "hybrid warfare". The concept became popular during the last two decades and was conceptualised by various academics. Nevertheless, it still lacks a commonly agreed definition and especially Russian warfare theories are often left out of analyses of the Ukrainian Crisis. Therefore, this thesis aimed at analysing the Russian intervention in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine in the beginning of 2014 based on an analytical framework established with the operationalisation of three American and three Russian theoretical concepts. This allowed for detecting whether the actions deployed by Russia can be considered "hybrid warfare". Indeed, the analysis revealed that the Russian Federation deployed a wide range of warfare elements which can be accounted for the "hybrid warfare" form. The main characteristics of the crisis are the deployment of unconventional warfare, best represented by the appearance of "little green men", as well as non-military means. The latter primarily includes psychological warfare means, for example information warfare and information technologies, which is especially in line with the Russian warfare concepts. |
