Abstract:In this thesis, several interventions are assessed by using discrete-event simulation, in order to increase operating room utilization at Bergman Clinics. The interventions concern adjusting the surgery scheduling rule, the planning horizon or the appointment flexibility. We have proposed a surgery scheduling rule that is based on revenue management. Combining this rule with the latest start time rule increases the average operating room utilization with 1.7%.The average surgery access time increases with 8 days. Using a shorter planning horizon improves surgery access times but is at the expense of operating room utilization. The appointment flexibility indicates the number of surgery dates that a patient can choose from. Less appointment flexibility results in higher operating room utilization. The difference in operating room utilization between an appointment flexibility of 1 choice and 4 choices is 4.5%. We conclude that improving the average operating room utilization is at the expense of the average surgery access time.
