Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to answer the following research question: How are non-acute incidental findings of the aortic abdominal aneurysms detected by radiological imaging techniques at Ziekenhuis Groep Twente, reported by radiologists in the radiological report to the referring medical specialist in 2018? Methods: The radiological reports were manually analyzed to collect reported clinical characteristics, and data about the structure and style used by the radiologist. The quality was measured based on the adherence to the protocol of ZGT and the guideline of the Dutch Society for Radiologists (NVvR). Results: In total, 179 radiological reports of incidental AAA findings were collected. AAA findings classified as non-acute were found in 157 of the 179 radiological reports. The report and conclusion section contained the incidental finding in 74 (84.7%) of the actionable and 44 (69.8%) of the non-actionable findings. Appropriate follow-up advice and nonroutine communication occurred for both in 13 (14.1%) of the actionable radiological reports. Conclusions: The quality of reporting and communication can therefore be improved to be more actionable.
