Abstract:The number of bonds issued by companies in emerging markets has grown strongly in the past decade. Between 2007 and 2018, the number of issuers has grown from 200 to over 600. This growth poses a challenge to fund managers. To keep the same level of intensity of coverage, fund managers need to have tripled analysts staffing over the decade, which would increase the costs of asset management and ultimately be to the detriment to the fund managers clients. An effective screening method can assist in allocating resources effectively, keep costs under control and aid focusing on securities that provide an attractive return potential. The output of the screening is a negative recommendation for a part of the universe, indicating that these securities are likely unattractive and that further in-depth analysis is unnecessary.
