Abstract:In 2000 the federal government of Germany adopted the Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz (EEG) in order to support and steer the energy transition and extend the share of renewable energy technologies of the overall energy supply. This thesis ought to outline the intended and unintended effects of the instruments of the Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz law between 2011 and 2017 in the scope of a sustainable energy transition. Therefore, a secondary data analysis in the form of a desk research was conducted and, further, expert interviews are used to support the drawn expectations. Transition theory, as well as the concept of mechanisms, were used to evaluate the impact of the EEG law on the German energy transition process. Furthermore, with the help of policy theory, the assumptions underlying the EEG law were studied. The study showed that the EEG law highly contributed to the breakthrough of renewable energy technologies and the success of the transition process. Additionally, it can be stressed that the regional, global and political circumstances crucially affected the performance of the transition triggered by the EEG law.
