Abstract:This research describes how to change the facility lay-out to improve the Overall Process Efficiency (OPE). Firstly, the perceived problems have been verified to see where possibilities for improvements are. Thereafter, several lay-out alternatives have been created by means of the Systematic Lay-out Planning (SLP) method. The main goal thereby was to reduce the total transportation distance, and to lower the number of crossings within the facility. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was then used to compare the alternatives to each other. The alternatives have thereby not only been scored on the decrease in transportation distance, but the costs, safety, product quality, and the ability to expand in the long future, were taken into account as well. It showed that the total transportation distance can be decreased by 32%. The number of hotspots is decreased, thereby increasing the safety level, and decreasing the waiting time. The materials and departments that are connected to each other, are placed close together.
