Abstract:In 2012, the position of Mental Healthcare Nurses (MHN) was introduced to provide mental healthcare in primary care. This was aimed to increase accessibility of care and, at the same time, decrease costs. The objective of this research was to detect patient characteristics which may have an effect on the chance of obtaining a consultation at the MHN. This retro-perspective quantitative cohort study analysed data for 2016 and 2017 (N=713,287). A t-test showed that there exists a small but significant difference in the use of service of general practices regarding MHNs between Limburg (M=3.4%, N=279) and Noord-Brabant (M=3.1%, N=125). Logistic regression analyses were used to detect determinants which have a higher Odds Ratio (OR) for consultations at the MHN. Consequently, the determinants women (OR=1.62; 95% CI [1.59 to 1.66]; p=0.00), age category 19-44 years (OR=3.60; 95% CI [3.44 to 2.79]; p=0.00), high or moderate SES (OR=1.11; 95% CI [1.03 to 1.20]; p=0.01) and living in an urban place (OR=1.56; 95% CI [1.52 to 1.60]; p=0.00) increases the chance to have at least one consultation with the MHN. Finally, a one-way ANOVA was performed and it became clear that there was no difference in prescriptions of medication for the years 2014-2017.
