Abstract:Obese patients after bariatric surgery need to be supported and motivated in order to achieve and maintain weight loss. Because of the potential added value of eHealth, this study executed a needs assessment for a future eHealth intervention. Study A has used a quantitative survey design to obain a broad picture of psychological characteristics of bariatric patients before and after surgery, and their relation with weight loss. Findings of this study can be used as a reference during the design of an eHealth intervention. Study B conducted a quantitative approach to detect problems after surgery, attitudes towards eHealth and user-requirements. Bariatric patients were provided with an existing eHealth intervention, VitalinQ. This is a healthy lifestyle intervention aimed improving health in the non-bariatric population. Semi-structured interviews showed that patients were very positive about the use of eHealth, but the current application was rated as not sufficient for bariatric patients in specific. Several needs to improve and adapt VitalinQ emerged, which were translated into user-requirements. Future researchers and eHealth developers should continue to develop a bariatric eHealth intervention, by continuing to follow user-centered design approaches and incorporating Persuasive System Design principles.
