The acts of kindness intervention is a positive psychological interventions which promotes performing kind acts for others. The present study, which is based on a randomized controlled trial, has investigated what the effect of performing acts of kindness to others is on mental wellbeing, stress and depression over time. The research conditions were performing acts of kindness for others (acts of kindness condition), performing acts of kindness for yourself (active control condition) and not performing both behaviours (waitlist condition). There were three measure moments: at the baseline, a post-test and a follow-up (six weeks after the intervention). Results of the linear mixed models analyses showed that there were marginal significant increasing effects for mental wellbeing and the wellbeing subscale psychological wellbeing and a significant decreasing effect for stress when performing acts of kindness to others is compared to performing acts of kindness for yourself or doing nothing. In addition, results showed that performing acts of kindness for others leads to a significant increase of mental wellbeing and psychological wellbeing and a significant decrease in stress and depression compared to people that do nothing. There were no significant effects found for emotional and social wellbeing. Results also showed that there were no significant differences in the amount of mental wellbeing (and the wellbeing subscales), stress and depression comparing performing acts of kindness for others to performing acts of kindness for yourself.
