Abstract:In an experimental study process-oriented and result-oriented feedback was offered in the educational serious game "Zeldenrust". The central research question was; what is the effect of process-oriented feedback and result-oriented feedback on perseverance and response to a failure experience in a mathematics serious game. The learning content consisted of proportional reasoning, which asked some effort of these pupils. 171 students, between 10 and 14 years, from three different schools, took part. The data was collected through logfiles, obtained by playing the serious game. No differences were found between feedback conditions in game behavior (i.e. time on task, number of correct answers, number of attempts) and the degree of perseverance. A regression analysis showed that students who Received Process-oriented feedback seemed to rely more on their prior knowledge of proportional reasoning which eliminated some of the effects of a frustrating minigame. This was particularly true for lower-performing students. From this data can be carefully concluded that Process-oriented feedback has an effect on how students respond to a failure experience.
