Abstract:Background: For a long time, Mental Health Care (GGZ) has been strongly focused on psychological dysfunction and treatment focused on psychological complaints. Nowadays, psychological well-being is increasingly included in the definition of recovery from psychological complaints. In response to the growing awareness that GGZ includes more than the absence of psychological complaints, Giovanni Fava developed wellbeing therapy (WBT). Much is known about this form of therapy, but there is no clear overview. What are the application forms of WBT? On which target groups has it been applied? What are the effects of WBT that have proven so far? The purpose of this review is to answer these questions in order to provide a clear overview. Method: A systematic literature search was applied in the autumn of 2017. Studies on WBT and the three research questions were included. Different search terms were used in the scientific electronic databases such as MEDLINE, Scopus, PsychInfo (EBSCO), PsycARTICLES (EBSCO) and Web of Science. Initially, 280 studies were found, of which 249, who did not meet the criteria, were excluded. 31 studies were included in this review. Results: The included studies took place in different countries, but especially in Europe. About half (51,6%) of the studies consisted of a randomized controlled research design (RCT). The studies show that WBT has been applied in different forms with different techniques. WBT can be applied as well as any therapy form as in addition to CGT using a sequential combination. WBT can also be added to pharmacotherapy or behavioral treatment, such as exposure therapy. Furthermore, WBT can be applied both individually and in groups. In addition, it appears that WBT is widely applicable in various mental disorders and patients in both clinical and non-clinical settings. The target group varies from an age of at least 8 to 64 years. This shows that WBT is applicable in children, adolescents and adults. Finally, WBT shows positive effects on mental health, namely reduction of psychological complaints and increasing psychological well-being in various mental disorders, complaints and target groups in various contexts. Discussion and conclusion: For the first time a broad and clear overview has been obtained from WBT and its three components. The results of the current study can be useful in the evaluation and adaptation of treatment programs, preventive interventions, WBT as online intervention, application of WBT to care providers and recommendations for future research into WBT. In the current study, a large part of the research has been carried out by the original developer of WBT and research has been carried out mainly in Europe. The studies also consisted of a relatively small sample. In the future, it is important to conduct meta-analyzes and randomized research with a large sample in different countries and with different researchers, so that more pronounced statements can be made about the usefulness of WBT in mental health care.
