| Abstract: | Eating disorders are psychiatric disorders that have serious long term effects. With the help of existing, traditional treatment methods, only limited improvement of symptoms is achieved. Positive Psychological Interventions (PPIs) focus on strengths of individuals. The goal is to increase positive emotions and well-being. Although research shows that PPIs are effective for the treatment of certain psychiatric disorders little is known about the effect of PPIs in the treatment of other psychiatric disorders. The aim of the current literature research is to map out which positive psychological interventions are already being used in the treatment of eating disorders and what the effects of these interventions are on the symptoms of eating disorders, well-being and the satisfaction of the individual. Using a systematic search strategy, a small number of studies (n=11) were found that are relevant to this study. Although the quality of these studies is low and the results need to be interpreted with caution, the results show positive effects with regard to the course of the disease, and the quality of life. Positive results were also found mainly with regard to the satisfaction of participants. PPIs seem to be suitable for the treatment of individuals with eating disorders. |
