Abstract:Rationale: Pediatric asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood. Treatment is focused on the control of asthma symptoms, enabling patients to fully participate in daily life. However, detection of symptom trends in childhood diseases is troublesome as asthma has an episodic nature and the expression of symptoms is often difficult to interpret. These aspects hamper the treatment of asthma, and urge the development of a monitoring tool that can signal worsening of asthma control. Therefore, this research focused on home-monitoring of asthmatic children using wearable technology. Methods: In this observational study 25 children were included and categorized in controlled (n=16) and non-controlled asthma (n=9) based on the outcome of an exercise provocation test. The study consisted of a home-monitoring period of two weeks. During this period lung function, physical activity, sleep, heart rate, respiratory rate and medication use were monitored. Results: Univariate analysis showed significant larger variation of baseline lungfunction (p=0.03), higher amounts of used reliever medication (p=0.01) and an increased respiratory rate recovery time (p<0.01) in the non-controlled asthma group. Conclusion: This study suggests that wearable devices can be used for home-monitoring of pediatric asthma. Wearable home-monitoring is feasible and provides the pediatrician with clinical information, which might be missed during regular pediatric asthma management.
