Abstract:There is a need for valid, systematic, and controlled ways of assessing and selecting applicants for learning laparoscopic surgery. Task-based assessment offers a promising alternative to classical aptitude testing. As a framework for this, we introduced the resemblance spectrum. The resemblance spectrum allows for an investigation of validity links between procedures of differing resemblance of technical laparoscopic skills, whilst also calling for a check of internal consistencies, to achieve completeness and precision inside a test suite. We let 40 psychology students conduct two simple dexterity tasks and four basic laparoscopic tasks in the LapSim and calculated correlations based on the population-level maximum performance. This parameter was extracted from a non-linear learning curve model. Small to medium correlations were found between LapSim-tasks, no correlations were found between LapSim- and dexterity tasks. The dexterity tasks correlated little. There is mediocre internal consistency of the set of basic laparoscopic tasks in the LapSim, but it may very well feature skills crucial for learning laparoscopy. There is no validity link between LapSim tasks and dexterity tasks. The two dexterity tasks are not internally consistent. Limitations of this study and implications for future research are discussed.
