Abstract:This research explores the possible psychological consequences for the victim following a mild form of victimization related to the presence of bystanders, and the influence an apology has on these consequences. The 122 participants (72 female, 50 male) had to build a jenga tower of forty stories together with a ‘peer student’ (one of the researchers). Because this task is impossible, the participant could not complete it and for this reason the researcher offended the participant hereby creating a mild form of victimization. Afterwards, the participants filled in a few questionnaires about the measured variables: perpetrator-blame, self-blame, bystander-blame, the four basis psychological needs, positive and negative affect an forgivingness. There was an effect of the presence of bystanders on perpetrator blame, namely in the condition with bystanders there was more perpetrator blame. Furthermore, an apology resulted in a diminished fulfilment of the need to belong. And the effect of forgivingness on negative affect, the need for self-esteem and the need for meaningful existence was significant. People high in forgivingness have more fulfilment of the need for self-esteem and the need for meaningful existence, and they also display less negative affect.
