Abstract:the assignment was to develop a solar powered charger of mobile phones for use in Cambodian rural areas. The design phase was for the largest part executed at the Kamworks location in Sre Ampil, Kandal, Cambodia. Detailing and finishing was done at the Twente University, Enschede. Important aspects of the design process were the market survey, prototyping and the production preparations. Most important features of the design were: integration wtih the Kamworks Moonlight and creating a product with two devices, a charger and a solar manel, developing a single-mold design for the product shell, setting recommendations and constraints for the PCB and allow manufacturing for a maximum of US$12,-. The project would focus on efficient production and pricing rather than usability and design. Time to market was considered to be more important than a aesthetically pleasing and refined design. The final design is able to charge a Nokia mobile phone battery once with the electricity that is generated by the solar panel on the average Cambodian day. Vecause the average users charge their phone once every 3 days, the product should be able to support the batteries of a family with 3 mobile phones. When users leave for an extended period they can take the separate charger with them to charge their phone when it's batteries are empty, increasing total battery life.
