Abstract:To design and develop efficient wind turbines, airfoils are measured in wind tunnels. These wind tunnels have limited capacities whereby conditions experienced by full scale wind turbines are difficult to replicate. Suzlon Blade Technology B.V. developed their own digital library with aerodynamic data, including a built-in function that extrapolates measured wind tunnel data to data with higher Reynolds numbers, comparable to real life situations. The results of the Reynolds correction method is mainly dependent on the reference data computed by the data source. Throughout this report Xfoil was used as the main data source. The reference data by Xfoil regularly showed different stall behavior in comparison with the wind tunnel data. Due to the interpolation between displacement vectors, the deviation at the stall angle extends to a bigger range of angles of attack. Another issue with the Reynolds correction method used at Suzlon, is the poor correction of flow phenomena like the laminar drag bucket. Besides the validation of the method, improvements were applied on the code of the program to prevent occurring bugs.
