Abstract:Staatsbosbeheer is the administrator of forests and nature in the Netherlands and operates for the government. The organization controls over 260,000 hactares of forests and nature. One of these terrains is Rottumeroog; a small island in the North of the Netherlands that is UNESCO world heritage. There are several protected species of rare birds that breed on this island during summer. To protect and watch over these birds, Staatsbosbeheer appointed two bird watchers that reside on the island for four months during the summer. There have been several accommodations on the island of Rottumeroog for these bird watchers, but all of these accommodations were unfit for its harsh environment. Experiments were done with different solutions, from tents to sea containers, but none of these solutions seemed to be sufficient for the island. The salt water, wind and sand kept wearing the accommodations down faster than expected. A possible solution for this problem would be to create an accommodation using the principles of Systems Engineering (SE), since SE takes all the challenges of a project into account and investigates the different requirements before coming to decisions. SE is a multidisciplinary design method that aims at identifying the problem very precise, before coming to any form of solution. The working hypothesis for this thesis is: the problems that occurred for the previous accommodations could have been prevented by using SE. However, Staatsbosbeheer has no expterise with the principles of SE, and has never designed with it. From this, the mail question from the thesis arose: "How can Systems Engineering be used as a design method to develop a sustainable construction on a remote location, where no infrastructure or energy sources are available and what are the effects of SE in this design method?"
