Abstract:Decisions in an enterprise are often complex and deal with many uncertainties. Uncertainties, if left unmanaged, can hamper value creation, lead to a loss of value or even result in catastrophic failures. The Enterprise Architecture (EA) of an organization is the enterprise-wide model that describes and aligns its business- and IT-architectures with the goal of optimizing value (creation). Due to the highly dynamic and complex environments typical in modern business and IT, EA projects are subject to large amounts of uncertainty and as a result often fail to generate desired results. Viewing EA as a series of investment decisions, this research introduces the Framework for Enterprise Uncertainty-Driven Decision-Making (FEUD) that structures and optimizes decision-making holistically throughout an EA. It pro-actively manages uncertainty by distilling risks and designing treatments structurally throughout the EA. It successfully incorporates and outlines a context, among other mitigation strategies, for Real Option Analysis (ROA) that provides a theoretical foundation to valuate investments in future flexibility. Designing for future flexibility aims to create options that allow an enterprise to respond to manifesting risks and reduces the costs of implementing architectural changes. FEUD extends EA frameworks, such as TOGAF and Archimate, by introducing a decision-making process and concepts.
