Abstract:Supercritical water has found many applications in the last decade and the range of applications keeps growing with time. These applications , such as the desalination of sea water and the gasi fication of biomass are based on the tunability of the properties of supercritical water. The energy requirement of these processes at supercritical conditions can be a draw back in the commercial scale-up. The energy necessary to bring water from standard ambient conditions to supercritical conditions of 300 bar and 450 ◦C is 3 MJ/kg [1]. A heat exchange apparatus is installed to use the heat of the product stream for the feed stream. To optimize the heat exchange apparatus a 1D model is developed to numerically calculate the heat exchange inside a heated tube and a single tube and shell heat exchanger. Both the models are executed in Matlab and validated through experimental data. The calculated values from the heated tube simulation are in agreement with the experimentally obtained data. The calculated values from the heat exchanger are not in agreement with the experimental ddata. The Nusselt correlations used in the heat exchanger simulation is not valid for the experimental conditions.
