Abstract:Goal: The goal of this research is to map out the mental models of the general public regarding Salmonella. By adapting risk communication to the beliefs of the general public, instead on those of experts, risk communication can be enhaced. By providing the general public the information they need for decion-making progress regarding positive health behaviour. Since zoonosis are unpredictable and can threathen national well-being, an effective risk-communication on their occurence is crucial. Method: This research has a qualitative reasearch design. 12 semistructured interviews regarding the prevention, spread, reservoir, contamination, origin, risk factors, consequences, treatment and need for information regarding Salmonella have been conducted within the general public. A inductive analasys was conducted and than the answers were compaired with the expert model. Results: It showed during the interviews that a lot of particepants had a hard time answering the questions. They several times stated that hey didn’t know the answer. Their mental modals contained both correct and incorrect beliefs for all of the categories. Conclusion: This research has provided insight in the mental models of the general public about Salmonella. These hold several misconceptions and incomple conceptions, differing innately from the beliefs held by experts. This prospect the integration of the mental models of the general public in risk communication, enhancing it’s effectivity and therefore the chance to perform positive health behaviour.
