Abstract:The report is about a project that has been conducted to investigate possibilities in stimulating and facilitating parental involvement in secondary vocational education (middelbaar beroepsonderwijs in Dutch) by using a technological solution. Parental involvement is defined as the notion of involvement of parents in the educational process of their children. Several literature studies show that parental involvement has positive effects on this process. However, currently the parental involvement in secondary vocational education lags behind other types of education. Several governmental institutes and studies state that parental involvement should be stimulated or facilitated in general, but especially with regard to secondary vocational education. A participatory design approach was used to conduct generative interviews with parents that have a child in a secondary vocational education school. These interviews were conducted to gain insights in the wishes and needs from parents in an application that facilitates or stimulates parental involvement. A focus on an application that facilitates communication with parents and schools was derived from the generative interviews. User requirements and designs have been constructed from these. Evaluations of the designs have been conducted in both qualitative and quantitative ways. Questionnaires were used to evaluate with parents that did not participate in the generative interview, as well as students. The qualitative evaluation consisted of evaluation sessions in which participating parents interacted with a prototype. The results from the evaluations have been used for final conclusions of the project. These provided insights in the wishes and needs of the parents. Finally, several guidelines for designing and developing an application that facilitates communication between parents and schools were constructed.
