Abstract:Conflict avoidance is seen as a deconstructive conflict management strategy. People who avoid conflict are not trying to actively work on a conflict solution. In certain situations, however, conflict avoidance may have a positive outcome on the conflict. In this study (N=65) I investigated the good and bad experiences of conflict avoidance at work, and in response to relationship conflicts, process conflicts and task conflicts. The good and bad experiences are measured in this study in terms of positive and negative emotions. The main results of this study show that conflict avoidance in relationship, process and task conflicts has a positive correlation with negative emotions. Avoiding conflicts is experienced as something negative. This is largely expected except for conflict avoidance in relationship conflicts. Contrary to our expectations, no significant associations found in this study between conflict avoidance and positive emotions. A striking significant relationship which was found, is that conflict avoidance in relationship conflicts has a positive correlation with the social interaction between colleagues. This research shows that avoiding conflicts in relation-, process, and task conflicts at work is associated with negative experiences, either, conflict avoidance seems to be a less constructive strategy to use in the workplace. However, avoiding relationship conflict in the social interaction between colleagues is associated with positive experiences.
