Abstract:Background: Tactus Addiction Treatment developed an online treatment for eating disorders. From the study of this treatment the treatment appears to be effective. However, there is a high percentage of clients (46%) that prematurely terminates the treatment. Objective: This study examined what factors play a role in the therapy of the 214 clients of the RCT of Etendebaas.nl who were enrolled between March 27, 2011 and December 5, 2013. Methods: From the questionnaires and records are several factors filtered. We looked at what objective factors, subjective factors and effect sizes drop-outs and completers differ, what factors are predictors of adherence and which reason clients specify for the early termination of treatment. Results: There are differences related to various disease and treatment-related factors between completers and drop-outs. The average number of messages from clients and counselors weekly are predictors of adherence. The higher the average number of messages for clients and responders per week, the greater the likelihood that the client finishes the treatment. Reasons for early termination of treatment were private conditions, lack of time, need for personal/phone contact, the treatment connected not well enough on the situation of the client, the client was satisfied with the results achieved so far and the treatment was time-consuming. Completers and dropouts differed significantly in their opinions of the internet treatment. There was a difference in the efficacy of treatment between dropouts and completers. Conclusions Adherence is important because the treatment is less effective when it is prematurely terminated. It is important to stimulate clients to be often busy with the treatment. This study shows that drop-outs have more co morbidity. It is important to early identify this and to take this into account.
