Abstract:Background: Mental health is necessary for people to lead a good life. Furthermore it is not only the absence of disease or mental disorder but also the presence of well-being which constitutes mental health. A high level of the subjective component of well-being is represented in little negative but many positive emotions and a satisfied and optimistically view of life. An effective technique to increase subjective well-being within positive psychology is taking part in web-based psychological exercises. Adherence has an impact on the effectiveness of interventions in different fields and is tried to apply to positive psychology. Objective: The goal of this study was to gain an insight into the effectiveness of different psychological exercises. Furthermore it aimed to obtain the difference in adherence for these exercises. Finally we took a look at the relationship between adherence and the effectiveness of the different exercises. Method: This study included a one-week web-based intervention in which 183 German participants voluntary did one out of the following four psychological exercises: optimism, positivism, happiness or gratitude. To measure the difference in effectiveness the measurement instrument “ PANAS” is used before and after the intervention as a pre- and post-test. Finally 105 participants indicated how they felt during the last week by considering two scales (positive and negative affect). Furthermore participants received one questionnaire everyday in order to evaluate their exercise, which measured their adherence. Repeated measure ANOVAs examined the differences in effectiveness. Differences in adherence were measured by a one-way ANOVA. The relationship between adherence and the differences in effectiveness was measured using regression-analysis. Results: The results show that there is no significant difference in exercises concerning positive affect. However this is a difference for negative affects as there are significant effects of exercises optimism and positivism. There are no significant differences for adherence and there is also no significant relationship between adherence and effectiveness of the exercises. Conclusion: The participation on positive psychological exercises does not lead to an increase of positive emotions but leads to a decrease of negative emotions. Especially exercising optimism and positivism provides a decrease in negative emotions. The adherence does not appear to be different and does not seem to influence the effectiveness of exercises. This study provides the occasion to do more research about negative affects. Furthermore it could be interesting to get to know more about external factors, which could have influence on the effectiveness of interventions.
