Abstract:This report describes the development of a design tool for children’s products and their application in the design process of a remote control for children. The first phase of the project was a preliminary research on children, with a specific focus on what is important in the design of products especially developed for children. Essential information about creativity, sensory perception, ergonomics and mental development of children were defined and processed in a design tool. In addition, the development has been summarized in a diagram. Some brainstorming sheets were made, with pictures and a list of characteristics for each age. The design tools were not only built to use in the design of a remote control for children, but also for guidance in future child related design tasks. The development of the design tools was followed up by an applied preliminary research in preparation for designing a remote control for children for Universal Electronics, a client of D’Andrea & Evers. Here, the design tools were used, a market research took place and the social aspects of watching television were examined. The analysis is concluded with a preliminary program of requirements. The next phase of the project consisted of the development of some concept proposals for a remote control for children. The ‘idea phase’ has been a survey on possible solutions. A brainstorming session was used to come up with additional ideas and the creation of three concept directions. A child interface in conjunction with a simple remote control, a remote control with headphones and a remote control with adjustable time are the three concept directions that were further developed in the design process. After the concept phase, the program of requirements was supplemented by requirements for each concept direction. The concepts were then explained in storyboards. Through a survey in which the three concept directions were presented to parents, opinions were determined and used in the further development of the concepts. Furthermore, some sub target groups were made to fit the concepts. The sub-groups consist of parents who encourage independence, parents who spoil their children and anxious parents. Next, the program of requirements was complemented to form a final version, with general requirements and requirements for each concept that fit the target groups. Eventually the three concepts were further developed. The concepts were finally formed through presentation drawings and six models. The report ends with a conclusion of the process. The application of the design tools has been a positive experience and has proven its functionality. Eventually, the concept proposals were developed into the desired level and D’Andrea & Evers now have three concepts which, in combination with a well-founded process, can be presented to Universal Electronics.
