Abstract:Recent research indicates the impact of institutional trust on avoiding harm and trouble in societal risks. In this research the impact of institutional trust and self-efficacy on safety behavior is studied. The aim is to improve the actual and perceived safety of a given situation. Also the contribution of the emotional reaction concerning a specific risk, and the susceptibility for the risk are researched in promoting safety behavior. These parameters were tested in the context of the social media platform: Facebook. An online scale was used, which was filled in by 133 respondents. The results showed that only self-efficacy is positively related to the actual safety behavior on a significant level. Also the emotional reaction appeared to be significant negatively correlated to the amount of self-efficacy. On the basis of hierarchical regression analyses is self-efficacy significant as the main predictor for safety behavior. Additionally the emotional reaction explains an extra percentage of the variance of safety behavior. Furthermore negative correlation between the susceptibility for a risk and the institutional trust were found, and a positive correlation between the institutional trust and self-efficacy. In conclusion is self-efficacy the best promoter for acting safely. In this context institutional trust doesn´t seem to have any positive impact on protecting behavior.
