Abstract:According to Fokkema & Steyaert (2005) people are getting more and more lonely while getting older age trough family dilution and social individualization. In accordance to the Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau (SCP, 2011), 25% of the 65-plussers is in a high risk condition to develop health problems, inclusion to a nursing home or demise. With the upcoming aging and the more and more use of computers in the Netherlands and the world, it could be useful and cost-effective to use technology. An example of such a technology could be a portal like the PAL4 community. The question here is of a portal can fulfil the needs of elderly regarding to technology. In the literature, I found information about the needs of older people, their motives for using a portal, the relationship of the elderly with technology, added value of a portal and how the needs are best met. This is summarized in the framework. The research is done in four steps: cognitive walktrough, scenario-based test, interview and questionnaire. The cognitive walktrough is done by running through the system and seeing the portal through the eyes of the elderly. The scenario based test and interview are based on literature. The questionnaire was used to obtain background data of the respondents. Due to look for responsiveness, number of clicks required and instructions asked the most difficult tasks of the scenario based test have been found. One of the hardest tasks is to edit the profile picture. This may be related to the difficulty and difficult design of the profile page. The results indicate that the most negative reviews were about the presentation of the page. Use of color and the amount of text scored high on negative reviews. The results show that the PAL community has on the moment no special value for the elderly. However, elderly reported that with more distinction and more concentration on the target (more recognizable problems and solutions) the system can add value to the lives of older people. PAL4 community should also adapt to more restrictions of elderly and apply it better in the presentation of the system. Continued research can be done with respondents who already use the system for a longer time. The implementation of portals needs, of course, time to better understand the system and see if it is an important instrument for the various needs of the elderly.
