Abstract:This study examines how personality and gender relate to career role performance and what implications this has for career success. Career roles are defined as a coherent set of characteristics of the effects of a person's functioning in work settings. In this study, career success had been distinguished in objective career success and subjective career success. The data of 804 women and 101 men, recruited through the journals esta and Psychology Magazine, shows that personality is a good predictor of the type of career roles and the number of career roles enacted. Also, men and women differ in the type of career roles they enact. The influence of career roles on career success becomes also clear. With exception of the career role Guide on subjective career success, all career roles mediate the relationship between personality and career success. Work-to-family conflict was included in this study as an explorative variable. A mediating effect of career roles on work-to-family conflict has not been found. In the discussion there are explanations for the results of this study and there are suggestions for follow-up research
