Abstract:The Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) is a feasible method in mechanically ventilated neonates to measure lung mechanics in the form of respiratory resistance and reactance. Unfortunately, the airway interfaces will influence these values. Therefore, this thesis aimed to examine the influence of the airway interface on FOT measurements and to develop a mathematical method to correct for it. We examined the influence of the ETT on reactance (Xtube) and resistance (Rtube) on the FOT measurements, for tube size, tube length, ventilator pressure, total lung volume, and simulated spontaneous breathing in a model with bellows. If a significant difference between groups was found for the Xtube values, these parameters were used to develop a least-squares model to correct for the found ETT influence. Tube dimensions did influence the Xtube and Rtube values. A correction model was made for Xtube according to the found correlations with a second-order polynomial fitting. This model had an R2 of 0.97. Moreover, the Xtube values also appeared to be mainly dependent on inertance, calculated according to literature. This equation had an R2 of 0.95. These models can support the development of normative values for FOT and description of lung mechanics over time, in respiratory supported infants.
