Abstract:People with mental disorders increasingly encounter difficulties to receive adequate treatment. Digital health interventions (DHIs) may help to overcome this issue. However, users are often not fully engaged in DHIs. This study aims to investigate the influence of different forms of feedback on engagement and depression outcome scores and to explore whether engagement mediates the relation between feedback categories and depression. Participants took part in a two-week mobile app intervention with daily exercises derived from evidence-based therapeutic approaches (e.g., CBT). Depression was assessed before and after the intervention and engagement was measured at day 1, 3, and 7. ANOVAs were used to test the effect of feedback on both engagement and depression. Mediation analyses were used to investigate a possible mediating role of engagement. An overall effect of the intervention to reduce depression was found. On average, no significant differences were found for different feedback categories on engagement and depression outcome scores and no mediating role for engagement was found. Only partly, engagement predicted post-intervention depression scores. The study findings suggest that individual participants might benefit from receiving a favorable feedback category matching their personal preferences which might positively influence their engagement and outcome scores.
