Abstract:In water management, computerized hydrologic models are used extensively to efficiently and cost-effectively, perform analyses. One of the largest implementations of hydrological models is the simulation of rainfall-runoff. The water module in Tygron is suitable for this purpose. Tygron is a software package that is constantly being improved and extended with more applications. In this way Tygron can be used to calculate more hydrological processes integrally. One of these new applications is the simulation of water flow through a stream system. In this study, an attempt was made to gain insight into the capabilities and limitations of the Tygron software for this implementation. For this purpose, a model of the Chaamse Beken (stream system southeast of Breda) was set up. Three processes for initialization have been worked out because a Tygron model cannot be initialized directly. For this, a GIS program is needed. Using Vonoroi polygons to create gauge areas in the GIS software gives the best results. This, in terms of calculation time reduction, but also because this way the groundwater can be initialized directly. Next, the influence of the roughness parameter in Tygron was investigated. This shows that the roughness in Tygron does have very important influence in the model but does not have the same influence and effect as in other models, or as in real streams. The roughness gets more influence in Tygron the higher the water level is. However, research shows that in real life, roughness gets less influence as the water level rises. Finally, a comparison was made between the Tygron model and a SOBEK model of the Chaamse Beken. This shows that there are major differences between the two models. Tygron generally builds a more realistic model. However, watercourses between trees are not well drawn in and the storage in narrower watercourses is underestimated. Also, the way in which culverts are placed in the model is still too sensitive to uncontrollable errors. Finally, the influence of the downstream boundary condition is very noticeable in the model. The flow rate through these outlets cannot vary based on calculations during a simulation but must be set in advance. This has an impact on the water level in the connecting watercourse. The study shows that improvements can be made in the software. To use Tygron properly for precipitation simulations in watercourses, knowledge of its limitations is necessary. Standard models in Tygron can be improved manually, for example by loading new watercourses or drawing in culverts manually. This often takes a lot of time and is sometimes only possible on a limited scale.
